How to withdraw from Balancer after the wind-down (Oct 30, 2026)
Balancer DAO voted to wind the protocol down (BIP-928, passed September 29, 2026). On October 30, 2026 most pools move to withdrawals only. Withdrawing does not depend on Balancer operating: the contracts are non-custodial, and Balancer keeps a simple withdrawal interface online. There are three separate things to check: your LP positions, the V1 exploit compensation, and the future BAL treasury redemption.
- Oct 30, 2026: pools that can be paused move to withdrawals only, with recovery mode where the contracts need it. Pools that can't be paused keep working
- Nov 30, 2026: the v3 Vault is paused, and v3 pools kept live for partners move to withdrawals only
- After both dates you can still withdraw at legacy.balancer.fi or straight from the contracts
- V1 exploit compensation: approved (BIP-930), claim not open yet
- BAL treasury redemption: round one opens at the end of May 2027
DeadBags does not scan Balancer positions yet, so this page is a guide only. Use the official tools linked below to see what you hold.
1. Withdraw your LP position
Withdrawals only means you can still take your share out of a pool, but you can't add liquidity, and swaps stop routing through it. Withdrawing before October 30 in the normal Balancer app is the easiest path. After that, use the legacy interface Balancer keeps online.
- Find what you hold. Balancer positions are ERC-20 pool tokens (BPT, B-…, bb-…) in your wallet, or gauge deposit receipts (…-gauge) if you staked them. The Balancer portfolio page also shows supported legacy positions and unclaimed rewards.
- Check v3 buffers too. Balancer v3 buffer shares use the Vault's internal accounting, so they may not show up on block explorers or portfolio dashboards.
- Staked? Unstake from the gauge first. That step can also claim pending rewards.
- Withdraw at legacy.balancer.fi. It is Balancer's guided interface for v1, v2 and v3 pools and for gauge unstaking.
- Expect a proportional exit. You get your share of every token in the pool (for example WETH, not ETH), and you can't choose a single token.
- v3 pool paused but not in recovery mode? On v3, anyone can switch recovery mode on (Vault.enableRecoveryMode), and then the recovery exit works.
- v2 pool paused but not in recovery mode? Then there is no exit until Balancer governance enables recovery mode. Balancer's exit guide lists the known cases, including a few first-generation boosted pools from 2021-2022 that have no exit path at all.
- No interface at all? Balancer's manual exit guide covers every pool type with explorer, cast and SDK recipes. Simulate first, set minimum amounts about 1% below the simulation, and only use contract addresses you verified.
2. Balancer V1 exploit (Aug 31, 2026): compensation claim
On August 31, 2026, attackers drained about $1.39M (priced at the time of the attack) from 120 legacy Balancer V1 pools on Ethereum. The main exploiter and whitehats returned 296.4 ETH to the Balancer DAO multisig. BIP-930, which sets how that ETH goes back to LPs, passed on October 6, 2026.
Three numbers that are easy to mix up: what was stolen ($1.39M), what was recovered (296.4 ETH, before whitehat bounties), and what affected LPs will actually be paid. Only the recovered funds are paid out, so most LPs should expect back part of their loss, not all of it.
- Who is eligible: anyone who held the pool token of one of the 120 affected V1 pools at block 25,872,248 on Ethereum, the last block before the first exploit transaction (Aug 31, 2026, 02:23 UTC). Eligibility comes from that block, not from what you hold today.
- How it is split: each pool gets a share of the recovered ETH in proportion to its share of the total loss. Inside a pool, holders are paid pro rata to their pool tokens at the snapshot block. Payouts are in ETH.
- Status on October 24, 2026: no claim is open. Balancer will first publish per-pool allocations, the holder lists, per-address amounts and verification scripts, then deploy a claim contract.
- To claim you will have to accept Balancer's terms, which release Balancer entities from liability for the exploit. Smart contract wallets and multisigs are handled case by case through admin@balancer.finance.
- Still holding a V1 pool token from an affected pool? Exiting returns only what is left in the pool today.
- Until Balancer announces the claim on its forum, any V1 claim link you get in DMs or replies is a scam.
3. BAL treasury redemption (from end of May 2027)
This is separate from your LP funds. BIP-928 returns the DAO treasury to BAL holders: you redeem BAL for a pro-rata share of the treasury, paid in the tokens the treasury actually holds. Nothing is paid before round one.
- Round one opens at the end of May 2027 and runs for six months, to the end of November 2027. Redeeming burns your BAL. The opening snapshot block is announced at least two weeks ahead.
- Round two (end of January 2028) is an airdrop only to addresses that redeemed in round one. A final sweep follows at the end of July 2028.
- veBAL unlocks into 80/20 BAL/WETH pool tokens. That pool stays exitable, so exit it to BAL, then redeem.
- Wrappers such as auraBAL and sdBAL run their own calendars. You redeem only if you have unwound to BAL before round one closes.
- The amount per BAL is not fixed yet. It is measured at the opening snapshot and audited. The claim mechanism is due on the forum by the end of February 2027.

FAQ
Do my funds disappear on October 30?
No. October 30 is when most pools stop taking deposits and swaps. Withdrawals stay open after that date, and Balancer's own app says so: "Withdrawals remain available after that date."
Can DeadBags check my Balancer positions?
Not yet. This page is a guide only. To see what you hold, use Balancer's portfolio page or legacy.balancer.fi, or look for Balancer pool tokens and gauge receipts on a block explorer.
Is the V1 compensation the same as withdrawing my LP tokens?
No. Withdrawing pays out what is in a pool now. The V1 compensation is a separate payout from recovered funds to holders at block 25,872,248, and its claim is not open yet.
I was affected by the November 2025 Balancer v2 exploit.
That is a separate program. Rescued funds are claimable per pool through Balancer's existing claim contract (BIP-892), and BIP-923 extended the claim window by six months. Use only links from Balancer's official forum or website.
Why did I get WETH instead of ETH?
Exits pay out the tokens the pool holds. If a pool holds WETH, you get WETH, and you can unwrap it to ETH at any time.
Does DeadBags touch my funds?
No. Every withdrawal goes from Balancer's contracts straight to your wallet. Never share your private key or seed phrase with anyone, and never approve tokens to an address you did not verify.
